GEORGE TOWN: For Quah Wan Wei and her nine-year-old son Boay Jyn Shyuan, taking part in a T-shirt designing contest was a fun way to spend time together.

Their winning piece was full of vibrant details with a heart-shaped felt pocket at the front of the shirt that could fit a teddy bear.

They won a 2D/1N executive suite voucher at Mei Hotel and a mini soft toy named Snuggles in the contest, which was part of the Charity Giant Patchwork Teddy – Mother’s Day Celebration at Gurney Plaza yesterday.

Quah, 36, said her son was a creative boy who enjoyed taking part in such activities.

“Although he has examinations soon, he didn’t mind taking part in this contest and we had a lot of fun,” said Quah, a part-time tutor.

The first runner-up went to Elaine Lee, 40, and her six-year-old son Darrel Lim, who won a buffet dinner voucher for two at Four Points by Sheraton Penang and a mini Snuggles.

The second runner-up was Sharon Tham, 36, and her eightyear-old son Mak Qin Xuan. They walked away with a voucher for hi-tea for two at Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang and a mini Snuggles.

Six mother-and-child teams took part in the contest organised by Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH).

Many children and parents also took part in activities such as Teddy Medical Clinic, Silent Auction, DIY Towel Teddy Bear and Cupcake Decoration.

Charity manager Jenny Ooi said the event sought to raise RM300,000 for the Dr J. Earl Gardner Fund, which aims to help needy patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as tumour, scoliosis and stroke, as well as those in need of cleft palate repair and major limb amputation, among others.

“We have managed to collect RM170,000. We seek the community’s support to meet our target in aid of the needy patients,” she said.

PAH chief executive officer Ronald Koh presented the prizes to the winners.

Also present were national squash player Low Wee Wern and PAH chief operation officer Thomas Tean.
