The Star Online attracted 11 million unique visitors during GE14 period

PETALING JAYA: The Star Online has set a fresh record of over 11 million unique visitors and over 106 million page views during the general election period.

Following Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s April 6 announceme­nt that Parliament would be dissolved the next day to pave the way for the 14th General Election (GE14), a total of 11,023,577 unique visitors have visited The Star Online for election news.

From April 6 to May 13, The Star Online also saw a record-breaking 106,083,259 page views.

Comparativ­ely, during the months of January to March, The Star Online reached a high of 6.9 million unique visitors with 57.3 million page views.

Some of the top stories during the election period was Pakatan wins it, public holiday for Thursday-Friday, Stop accepting Barisan leaders into Pakatan, Dr M told and Get the latest GE14 results which was The Star Online’s live results coverage.

On May 10 alone, The Star Online garnered 2.2 million unique visitors, with 14.4 million page views.

News on Pakatan’s win, along with the announceme­nt of May 10 and 11 as public holidays, and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad being sworn in as Prime Minister were the top read stories of the day.

Previously, in March last year, the website registered a record of more than 7.5 million unique visitors (7,530,008) and over 62 million page views (62,128,766).

Just a week before that it achieved an all-time high of 7.1 million users.

The Star Online previously set a record of 7,065,707 unique visitors and nearly 60 million page views (59,994,263) during 31 days of the disappeara­nce of flight MH370 in March 2014.

The most read news items of the past month have been related to the murder of Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean lead- er Kim Jong-un at Kuala Lumpur Internatio­nal Airport 2 on Feb 13.

An article on the fatal shooting of a woman while she was driving her BMW in Sungai Dua, Penang, on Feb 21, and of a student killed by a BMW travelling on the wrong side of the road on Feb 16, were the second and third most read stories of the month.

Last year was a fantastic one for The Star Online.

There were record numbers in terms of page views and unique visitors to the site.

Below are the list of Top Five News Stories of the Year, in no particular order.

It seems that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is still a newsmaker, and his response the Forest City issue garnered 21% of our readers’ votes.

Next up was the horrific murder at the petrol station in Johor Baru ( 15%), followed closely by the dressing down by the Johor Ruler, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, on a Muslim-only laundrette (14%), and the declaratio­n of Sept 4 as a public holiday (13%).

In joint fifth position at 12% were two starkly contrastin­g stories: The tragic death of 11-yearold schoolboy Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi at a tahfiz (religious school); and adult film star Maria Ozawa’s visit and shout-out to Kuala Lumpur.
