Pekan folk grateful for Najib’s contribution

PEKAN: The new Government is up and running but the people of Pekan are still adjusting to the shock of their MP losing the prime minister’s post.

Housewife Hayati Adnan, 45, congratulated the newly formed Government but said the town would not have enjoyed such rapid development if not for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“The people of Pekan owe him so much for what he has done for the town and the areas within his constituency.

“We will not forget him although he is no longer the prime minister as he is still our MP,” she said, adding that to the youth here, he is a beloved father figure.

She accepted the election results as fate and hoped the new Government would perform its duties as well as its predecessor.

Another resident, Nur Syakirah Nor Azam, 23, said she was happy to see that Pekan had developed well and would keep an open mind about the future.

“Young people like me have an open heart to accept the changes that are taking place.

“We were all familiar with the previous government but the change brought about by the voters should be interpreted as a signal to further develop the country for future generations,” said the firsttime voter from Kampung Panchor here.

After Barisan Nasional’s defeat in GE14, Najib also resigned as Umno president and Barisan chairman.

Najib defended his Pekan seat but fell short of achieving his target of a 40,000vote majority.

He won with a majority of 24,859 votes, defeating PAS’ Ahiatudin Daud (18,995 votes), Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Muhammad Zahid Md Arip (7,662) and Independent Abd Kadir Sainudin (103).
