Villagers finally get to enjoy clean water supply

KOTA BARU: Some 200 villagers in Kampung Simpang Tiga are elated to get clean water supply before the fasting month begins.

The village in Pengkalan Chepa is the 15th location for Petronas Dagangan Bhd’s “Water for Life” programme initiated nationwide five years ago.

Its marketing (downstream business) vice-president Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said they had fitted 750-litre and 1,500-litre tanks in 39 households in Kampung Simpang Tiga.

“They come complete with a water pump, piping system, and water filtration system. It will benefit 200 residents here,” he said.

This is part of Petronas’ corporate social responsibility programme jointly implemented with Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd, with the support of the Department of Environment and the Malaysia Nature Society.

“Upon getting feedback on challenges faced by the villagers here, we have decided to expand our Water for Life programme here to help overcome a shortage of clean water faced by the people,” he said at the launching ceremony.

Also present were state DOE director Hamzah Mohammad and Air Kelantan general manager Wan Mohd Zamri Wan Ismail.

Apart from supplying clean water, Syed Zainal said the programme was also aimed at educat-

ing residents on water rehabilitation, and the health risks in consuming unclean water.

Villager Wan Mastura Wan Mah-

mood, 36, said they faced constant water supply problem because of low water pressure.

“Now, with the pump and tanks,

we can observe Ramadan with an abundant supply of clean water.

“Before this, we had to rely on dirty water from the well,” she said.
