Four others nabbed as they tried to flee after robbing a jewellery shop.

PETALING JAYA: Two suspects were gunned down by police after a robbery at a jewellery store at a shopping complex here.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said six robbers wearing full-faced helmets and jackets stormed the mall in Damansara Jaya at 5pm yesterday.

“The Petaling Jaya district police were informed of this incident and headed there immediately.

“When they arrived, they ran into the suspects who had finished robbing the store and were trying to escape on four motorcycles parked outside,” he told reporters outside the mall.

SAC Fadzil said the suspects first fired at the police who then returned fire.

Besides the two who died, a third suspect was shot twice and injured.

He was arrested with the three other uninjured suspects.

SAC Fadzil said the suspects are part of a syndicate which has been active in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan since 2017.

“So far, this group had been involved in eight robbery cases since last year.

“We believe there are other suspects who are still at large and we are still looking for them,” he added.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, saw the suspects carrying hammers and black-coloured bags into the mall.

“They were walking slowly and once they were inside the mall, they ran towards the goldsmith shop,” the witness said.

“When we heard the sound of breaking glass, we ran inside a storeroom to hide.”

Hadi Iskandar Mohd Rashidan, 23, who works at a cafe on the same level as the jewellery shop, put his life on the line when he shouted “Stop! Stop!” to draw attention to what was happening.

“I saw at least six people running out together from the jewellery shop.

“After that I heard shots being fired and police started to surround the area and told us to stay inside,” he said, adding that it was crazy to have witnessed the shootout.
