Villagers spend night in surau after flood
BALIK PULAU: Villager Fadhilah Hashim, 55, had sahur with her family members at a nearby surau after their house was flooded.
The heavy rain began at about 8.30pm and by 10pm on Saturday, Fadhilah knew they were in for a miserable night.
“Younger family members sent the three of us to a nearby surau.
“We spent the night there and returned home after dawn,” she said yesterday at their house in Kampung Bukit Kecik, Sungai Pinang, near here.
Fadhilah said that her neighbourhood was often hit by floods after heavy rain as the nearby river overflowed.
Families in Gertak Sanggul were also seen cleaning their homes affected by floods following heavy rain which started at 8.30pm until 11.15pm on Saturday.
Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz shared photos on Facebook of him and his team visiting affected families.
The photos, uploaded at around 1am yesterday, showed him talking to flood victims at their home after the water subsided.
Azrul aims to start flood mitigation projects in the affected area as soon as possible.
“I will follow up on the construction of a pumping station in the area,” he said.
Teluk Bahang assemblyman Zolkifly Md Lazim also shared photos of his visit to those affected by the floods in Sungai Rusa.
Balik Pulau MP Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said he and his team are currently compiling a list of the affected areas.
He said the list will be sent to Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
“Some of the affected areas in my constituency include Taman Manggis, Gertak Sanggul and Taman Permatang Pasir,” he said.
Zairil said he will visit the affected areas and hold a press conference on the matter today.
The Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Department evacuated six people from Kampung Bukit Kecik at 12.19am yesterday.
The department’s flood report stated that the water rose to more than 60cm and flood victims were evacuated to the village surau.
