1MDB task force starts work today
KUALA LUMPUR: The newly formed 1Malaysia Development Bhd ( 1MDB) special task force is getting to work quickly by having its first meeting a day after its formation was announced.
Its co-head Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said the task force, which was set up by the Prime Minister’s Office, would meet today.
“We will speak to you guys then,” said the former Attorney-General when approached by reporters after the meeting yesterday.
With Abdul Gani were other co-heads – MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull as well as his predecessor Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed.
They entered the building at 2pm and left at about 3.30pm.
The fourth member of the task force, former Special Branch deputy director Datuk Abdul Hamid Bador, was not present.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office announced the setting up of the task force to probe the 1MDB case as well as look into any criminal offence by individuals involved in the fund’s management.
Reporters also spotted former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman, who heads the 1MDB committee formed under the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP), at the Ilham Tower.
Asked on the difference between the committee headed by him and the task force, Abu Talib said: “The investigating team (the special task force) will report to our committee (the 1MDB committee formed under the CEP).”
The committee, he gave an assurance, would investigate the case fairly and thoroughly in line with the law and procedures.
“We will observe the rule of law as stressed by the Prime Minister.
“An announcement will be made by the CEP secretariat,” he said.
On another matter, the CEP was briefed by several top officials from various institutions and organisations in several meetings which began at 10.30am.
The CEP had called Finance Ministry (investment) deputy secretary-general Datuk Asri Hamidon and its government investment company division undersecretary Datin Rashidah Mohd Sies.
It also called Petronas president and group CEO Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin, Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia president Datuk Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz and Inland Revenue Board CEO Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah.
