Modi: Fruitful meeting with Dr M
PUTRAJAYA: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described his meeting with Malaysian government leaders as fruitful.
Modi made a brief stopover in Malaysia to personally extend his best wishes and congratulations to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the general election as well as his appointment as Prime Minister.
He was greeted by Dr Mahathir when he arrived at Perdana Putra at 11.35am yesterday.
Dr Mahathir, via his Twitter account @ chedetofficial, said: “Receiving courtesy visit by Prime Minister of India, His Excellency The Honourable Narendra Modi. Selamat Datang ke Malaysia (Welcome to Malaysia).”
This was the first meeting between the two leaders. Modi last visited Malaysia on Nov 23, 2015.
On his Twitter account @ narendramodi, the Indian Prime Minister said he was glad to have met Dr Mahathir.
“I thank him for the warm welcome. We had productive discussions on further cementing India- Malaysia ties,” he wrote.
His office’s Twitter account @ PMOIndia said Modi and Dr Mahathir held discussions on boosting economic and cultural ties between India and Malaysia.
Modi also met Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at KL International Airport’s Bunga Raya Complex before he left for Singapore.
Modi also tweeted: “Delighted to have met Deputy PM Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Mr Anwar Ibrahim. We had fruitful discussions on a wide range of subjects relating to India-Malaysia friendship.”
