Patriotism in the new era
IN the democratic spirit of government of the people for the people by the people, Malaysians from all walks of life have come together to chart their own future by being a part of the new government they voted into power to right the wrongs that were perpetrated by the old regime.
By that, the people have expressed their vested interest in governance to ensure an open, accountable, ethical and honest government. The people have indicated that the burden of governance is no longer the sole responsibility of the elected representatives; it is also their own.
This is the patriotic spirit that has long been absent in this country because of political, racial and religious schisms.
The Pakatan Harapan victory ushered in a new era of tolerance and understanding that transcend those bigoted divisive elements. It is in this new spirit of patriotism that the people initiated the Tabung Harapan Fund to show their commitment to the Government.
It is not so much about the amount of money collected, which will never be enough to offset the RM1tril national debt, but the willingness to shoulder the burden to alleviate the economic woes of the country. This spirit of patriotism is expressed not through the clichéd flag flying and/or loyalty pledge but wells from within, from the heart and mind.
Yet there are detractors who question the purpose of this people-driven initiative, cautioning that it would set up an unhealthy precedence of dependence and bad fiscal management. Such people are only now creeping out of the woodwork, cautioning and offering unsolicited and non-constructive advice when they remained muted in the face of colossal corruption and malfeasance that culminated in the country’s current economic predicament.
We should ignore these people because they are of no consequence morally and ethically.
The people have indicated their intent in ensuring good governance and are willing to shoulder the responsibility and make sacrifices for the betterment of the country and future of their children.
