Container night market a hit in Kota Kinabalu
KOTA KINABALU: The first of its kind, the ASquare Container night market here is making its way into a long list of buka puasa spots in the city.
Sabahans have been flocking to the trendy container stalls adorned with fairy lights since the market’s debut in August last year.
Famous for crafty twists such as cendol with non-alcoholic tapai, cheese coffee and stinky tofu, it also serves more common street food like fried octopus, grilled lamb and frozen yoghurt.
There are stalls offering Bornean food to Thai, Filipino and even Korean cuisine.
The night market is a favourite spot to buka puasa and catch up for Atikah Parasin and her friends Amirah Kasran and Adriana Samadun, all 26.
Businesswoman Amirah said they have been hanging out at the market as it is spacious and nicely decorated.
“We did some shopping at a nearby mall and wanted to come here for its famous grilled lamb stall,” said Adriana.
“It’s a nice environment to catch up with friends over food,” said Atikah, an administrative worker.
However, it is not only the local folk who visit for the food as is the case with Sarawakians Zulhamizan Mohd Sufian, Mohd Faiz Mohd Hailan, Abdul Samat Mardan and Fiqri Assyafiq Abu Bakar Sham.
“We went to another night market earlier but decided to come here after hearing the good reviews.
“We’re spoilt for choice as there are many things to try,” said Zulhamizan, 23, a student at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sepanggar.
The ASquare Container night market is one of more than 20 food bazaars available during Ramadan and is open daily from 4pm.
