Ex-lecturer gives her all, takes little
Besides the tuition centre, mother of two also teaches orphans and refugees for free
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Education is priceless but worthless if it doesn’t reach those who need it.
With this in mind, former child psychology lecturer G. Malini, 40, started a tuition centre in Bukit Minyak to keep education affordable.
She started Brainy Tuition Centre in November 2015 which has now grown to about 90 students from Year One to Form Five.
Fifteen of them are studying for free while the rest are charged only a minimal fee.
“I have a nine-year-old son and a sevenyear-old daughter. Both of them have a good life and not deprived of education.
“But seeing that many other children in the neighbourhood, especially in Taman Mangga, having difficult access to education due to the rising cost of living, I decided to help them.
“The needy students from single parents or poor families will be exempted from paying a certain amount of tuition fees.
“About 15 of them are given free education as long as they come and learn,” Malini said in an interview.
Malini, who is assisted by her logistics manager, husband S. Harikrishnan, 42, is also grateful to the teachers at the centre – many of whom are willing to teach for a low salary.
The tuition centre covers all subjects, including Mandarin lessons.
Besides operating the tuition centre, Malini is also volunteering at Batu Grace Home in Kulim on Saturdays where she teaches English.
She also teaches Bahasa Malaysia twice weekly to 130 students at the Burmese Refugee Centre in Bukit Tengah.
“I hope all children will not be left out of education, which is the key to success.
“With more support, I hope to open up more tuition centres to provide a larger reach,” she added.
