Dr M: If you are 90, don’t drive

-

PETALING JAYA: Perhaps no one exemplifies the “cando spirit” better than Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad but there is something that the Prime Minister doesn’t want you to do.

“Those who are 90, better not drive! I enjoy driving but I only get to do so on the weekends,” said the 93yearold.

Even then, he said there would be someone seated next to him and that person was always gesturing to him to be cautious.

The Prime Minister said this in a lighthearted moment during a brief video appearance with Transport Minister Anthony Loke on road safety in conjunction with Hari Raya.

Dr Mahathir advised drivers to rest and take a short nap if they felt sleepy.

As for those with outstanding traffic summonses, he said they should be responsible and pay up.

Asked about discounts for summonses for the festive season, he quipped: “If there are discounts for summonses, I think it will not be a deterrent to us.”

Loke noted that the Government did not intend to penalise road users with traffic summonses but said it was a reminder for them to be aware about road safety issues.

“I recently issued a directive for affected cars to replace airbags, otherwise they will be issued a summons,” he said.

Asked if the Government would implement new road regulations, Loke said the ministry was studying whether there was a need for it.

“What’s important is that when we drive back to our hometowns, we must remember that we want to be with our family.

“If you are sleepy while on the road, try listening to some music to liven up the mood,” he said.
