Najib: Dr M’s comments show PH made baseless claims
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says the Prime Minister’s comments on 1MDB showed that Pakatan Harapan had made up allegations against him without proof.
Najib said that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remarks proved that Pakatan Harapan has been making baseless allegations against him.
“He (Dr Mahathir) said if the evidence is not strong and if I am found innocent by the court, then every allegation and action by Pakatan Harapan will be questioned by the people.
“By saying so, Dr Mahathir is admitting that Pakatan’s allegations against me are being made without solid evidence,” Najib said in a Facebook posting yesterday.
Najib also said Dr Mahathir’s remarks also proved that the purported existence of a charge sheet against him in 2015 was not true, and that it was part of a conspiracy to use a certain individual in the Government to topple him.
“At that time, my statement was never recorded by the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC), so why should there be a charge sheet?
“Until now, Pakatan wanted to justify its allegations by looking for ‘evidence’, whether they were real, imagined or fictitious,” he added.
“I want to reiterate that I have never received any benefits or stole money from 1MDB or any party. If I’m charged on politicallymotivated reasons, I’m confident that the court will prove that I am innocent,” he said.
In a speech in Tokyo on Sunday, Dr Mahathir said that it isn’t easy to charge Najib because there must be strong evidence that will “stand up in court”.
Meanwhile, Najib also responded to Dr Mahathir’s remark that the Government will no longer send Muslims to perform the haj using “stolen money”, in an apparent reference to funds related to 1MDB.
Najib said he is saddened that low income Muslims will no longer receive financial aid from the Government to perform the haj.
“Dr Mahathir is mistaken by claiming that the money used by 1MDB to fund thousands of haj pilgrims were proceeds from theft.
“He has always made allegations of ‘ stolen monies from 1MDB’. But how can 1MDB steal from its own coffers to enable it to finance haj pilgrims?”
