NIBONG TEBAL: A car was totally wrecked while another half-burnt following an accident involving three cars on the North-South Expressway during the balik kampung rush on Saturday.

South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Shafee Abdul Samad said all three cars were heading north when one of them switched lane and lost control, leading to the accident at KM159.8 at about 7.15am.

“Muhamad Amir Hafizi Zulkifly, 21, who was heading from Sungai Chenaam towards Sungai Petani, switched lanes to avoid slow moving vehicles in front of him.

“As he attempted to squeeze between two other cars in the right lane, he lost control of his vehicle and hit into the car in front, which was driven by Fazli Mohamed Saaid with five passengers on board and heading from Seri Iskandar, Perak, to Kuala Nerang, Kedah.

“The other vehicle coming from behind, driven by 48-year-old German engineer Nicola Axel Hadull swerved to the left and rammed into the road barrier, and the front portion of his car burst into flames,” Supt Shafee said yesterday.

Muhamad Amir’s car was said to be a write-off after it spun out of control and hit the barrier, he added.

In GEORGE TOWN, a 22-year-old motorcyclist died after his motorcycle collided headon with a pick-up truck at the Penang Bridge exit on Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said the accident involving two vehicles happened at 2am yesterday.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the motorcyclist, Muhammad Syahrul Iskandar Anwar, was riding against the traffic when the accident happened.

“He died on the way to Seberang Jaya Hospital,” he said.

ACP Anuar added that the pick-up truck driver escaped unhurt and the police were investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless driving.

Later at about 3pm, a car turned turtle at KM3.2 of the Penang Bridge from the island heading towards the mainland, causing a long crawl.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said traffic resumed after the vehicles were towed away.

“The driver only sustained minor injuries,” he said.
