IPOH: Street musician Hassan Basri may have been estranged from his wife and children but it was not an excuse for him to rely on goodwill alone to support himself.

Instead, the 59-year-old has been entertaining people with his music, creatively put together using instruments made of household items.

“I love music and singing since young, and I learnt to sing a good repertoire of Malay classic numbers.

“I do not make much money and I cannot afford to buy any musical instruments.

“So, I just make do with things I can find at home,’’ he said after performing at a budget hypermarket in Jelapang near here.

Hassan said he preferred rhythmic songs as the beats sounded lively when played on his modified drum set, consisting of several plastic bins.

He said he began covering patriotic songs last year and the response had been good.

Other than busking at shopping complexes, Hassan said he also performed at events that he was invited to.

“I am getting old but I have no intention to live on charity.

“I could still make a living by myself and I feel good when people enjoy my music,’’ he said, adding that he never made more than RM100 a day.
