Second medal for Rayzam in USA

KUALA LUMPUR: Giving up the chance to celebrate Hari Raya with his family paid off for national hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian when he roamed to the men’s 110m hurdles bronze medal in the International Track and Field Event Soundtrack in Tubingen, Germany.

The 30-year-old clocked 13.95 for third place on Saturday but his timing was way off of his national record of 13.67 set at the Kurpfalz Gala Championships in Weinheim, Germany in May.

German’s Traber Gregor won the gold in 13.35 while Smet Koen of Holland finished second with a time of 13.82.

It was the second time Rayzam, who is from Keningau, Sabah, won a bronze medal in a competition in Germany.

On June 9, Rayzam clocked a season best of 13.86 in the Zeulenroda International Meet in Germany for a bronze medal.

Rayzam said he missed the chance to celebrate Hari Raya with his wife (Eriyana Idris) and daughter (Rayyana Arya) in Keningau this year.

“But it doesn’t matter as my sacrifice paid off well as I won my second medal in my second competition in Germany,” said the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games gold medallist.

“It feels really good to win a medal on the second day of Hari Raya (Saturday) in Germany.

“I want to continue to win medals in competitions in Germany,” said Rayzam, who will be featuring in the Asian Games in Jakarta from Aug 18-Sept 2.

Rayzam made his debut in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April but failed to qualify for the final after finishing sixth in the heats with a time of 14.03.
