‘Najib will face the consequences’
PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will face the consequences of any wrongdoing related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal if there is clear proof, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
This follows the arrest of a former special officer to Najib over investigations into the financial case.
The 42-year-old Datuk has been remanded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for seven days until July 1.
The arrest is the first since investigations into the state investment fund were reopened.
Dr Mahathir, when asked whether there would be more arrests in the near future and whether Najib would be among those nabbed, said: “Well, Datuk Seri Najib is being investi- gated. If there is clear proof of his wrongdoing, then action will be taken according to the law.”
The Prime Minister said this at a media conference after chairing Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s supreme council meeting at the party’s headquarters here.
Dr Mahathir is Pribumi chairman.
In an interview with Reuters on June 19, Dr Mahathir said Malaysian authorities are looking to bring charges of embezzlement and bribery of government money against Najib, among others.
He said that Malaysian investigators already “have an almost perfect case” against the principal suspects who had defrauded 1MDB and misappropriated billions of ringgit in public funds.
