GEORGE TOWN: Car sales in Penang is so good that a company has resorted to displaying a “scoreboard” during a sales drive here over the weekend.

Every time an order is placed, the sales adviser at the Tan Chong Motors showroom in Bayan Lepas will flip out the next number on the board.

Many buyers pose with the scoreboard for pictures to show their pride in booking a new set of wheels at lowered prices.

Nissan cars are being offered at rebates of RM7,000 for a Teana and up to RM15,000 for the latest Navara.

The sales drive yesterday began at 10am and by noon, the tally hit 16 cars booked.

When The Star visited the outlet, four sales advisers were seen flipping the scoreboard several times within an hour.

A sales adviser, who declined to be named, said the scoreboard was for car buyers to get a feel of how fast cars were being snapped up. “They would understand if there was a waiting period for their cars.”

He said the showroom’s target was to sell 80 cars between Saturday and Sunday and they were confident of hitting it.

“Our rebates are a combination of our Hari Raya promotion and the absence of the Goods and Services Tax,” he added.

He observed that families came in droves over the weekend. eration which “A hot appealed of favourite the Nissan to them.” is the Serena latest MPV, genA buyer, who wanted to be known only as Khoo, said he was mulling getting an MPV for more comfortable family trips and also for his wife to use. “She is driving a small car. But I think housewives should drive a family type MPV. “We knew about the rebates at Nissan and came here to check it out” said the 48-year-old businessman.

Another sales adviser said there was no deadline for the rebate but prices should go up when the Government rolls out the Sales and Services Tax (SST) in September.

“But if you want to buy a car now, you should do it by next month because if we run out of stock and your car arrives after the SST starts, you might have to pay the new tax.”
