Tamil school to be set up in Pangkor

-

THE new Perak government under Pakatan Harapan will look into setting up a Tamil school on Pangkor Island, Tamil Nesan reported.

Sungkai assemblyman A. Sivanesan said that in 2008, the then Pakatan Rakyat state government identified a site for the school but the location was later rejected.

While a new place was being sought, a change of state government took place, he said, adding that the previous Perak mentri besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir continued efforts to get the school built.

Sivanesan said it was understood that the previous government bought a land from a private resident and RM7mil was allocated to complete the school.

Sivanesan, who is the Perak Health, Consumer Affairs, Civil Community, National Integration and Human Resources Committee chairman, said he would be writing to the Education Ministry to confirm the status of the proposed Tamil school.

> A nine-year-old girl and her father in the hilly state of Tripura, India, were hailed as heroes by the community and local government after their quick action saved more than 2,000 rail passengers, the daily also reported.

The two from an indigenous community were collecting bamboo on a mountain near their home in Tansera when they realised that a passenger train was approaching the area which had experienced many landslides following heavy rains in the north-eastern state.

Svapan Theparma and his daughter Somathi took off their shirts and frantically waved at the oncoming train, which stopped.
