Baby flung from building clings on to life
Newborn’s mother remanded to assist probe
KAJANG: The newborn boy who survived after being thrown out from the second floor of a building here is in critical but stable condition, said Kajang Deputy OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Abdullah.
“The baby is receiving treatment at Kajang Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit,” he said when contacted yesterday.
It was reported that the baby boy survived after he was flung from the building at Jalan Hentian 4 of the Kajang bus terminal here.
The baby was picked up by the owner of a nearby restaurant at about 5pm on Sunday.
He rushed out after hearing a loud bang and found the baby lying in the middle of the road.
Police detained a foreign woman at about 11.30pm that same day. She has been remanded till July 1.
The motive for the case is still under investigation.
The case has been classified under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandoning a child below the age of 12.
In Kangar, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the baby whose mother is Indonesian would be taken care of.
“She is a foreigner who came here and was caught in a situation where she delivered the baby herself.
“We still need to help the baby and mother, and the baby is innocent.
“He will be put up for adoption if he survives,” she told reporters during a press conference after the National Parents Day celebration at the Wawasan 2020 Hall here yesterday.
Dr Wan Azizah declined to comment further as the case was still under investigation.
However, she expressed regret that the mother had not sought assistance from the Welfare Department or the ministry, which had various intervention programmes to curb baby dumping.
