Lee fired up for Sindhu clash

-

NATIONAL women's singles shuttler Lee Ying Ying is relishing yet another battle with a world top five opponent when she takes on India’s P.V. Sindhu in the second round of the Celcom Axiata Malaysian Open today.

The 20-year-old cleared her first hurdle by beating Taiwan's Chiang Ying-li 21-14, 19-21, 21-7 yesterday.

It was already Ying Ying's best ever outing in the Malaysian Open after failing to make the main draw in her debut in 2016.

But she's eager to make this tournament an even memorable one by giving Rio Olympics silver medallist Sindhu, ranked third in the world, a stiff fight.

“I'm looking forward to meeting Sindhu. She's the second world top five player I'm facing this year after Carolina Marin (in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Masters in January),” said Ying Ying.

“It's going to be a very tough game for me as she (Sindhu) is very tall and her attacking shots are very sharp and powerful. Her playing style is very similar to Marin’s.

“I have to pay a lot of attention to my defence and try to attack back whenever possible.”

Goh Jin Wei is the other Malaysian in the women's singles in the second round having secured her spot on Tuesday.

She takes on seventh seed Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea for a place in the last eight.

National No.1 Soniia Cheah found world No.1 Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan too hot too handle, losing 10-21, 9-21 in just 30 minutes.
