JOHOR BARU: With less than 48 hours before Umno chooses its new leadership, the party’s bank accounts of its main headquarters and Selangor office have been frozen by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Party acting president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he was notified of it via a phone call yesterday, adding that he was also informed that the MACC would also freeze the accounts of Johor Umno.

He did not reveal who the caller was.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said several Umno leaders would also be investigated by the anti-graft body soon.

“There is no guarantee that any Umno president, his deputy, vice-presidents or supreme council members who win the party elections this time around will not be investigated by the MACC.

“(Also to be investigated) include former mentris besar, because we are no longer the government,” he said during the Johor Umno gathering here.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also claimed that Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin would be asking the Registrar of Society (RoS) to de-register Umno.

Meanwhile, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is vying for the Umno president’s post, warned delegates not to be influenced by money politics that would destroy the party.

He reminded Umno members that the party was once an Opposition party during its formation.

“When the party was formed in 1946 at Istana Besar here, we were fighting against the British, who wanted to introduce the Malayan Union.

“It is not impossible for Umno to form the government again because this party has fought against the British government,” he said.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also promised that if he were to win the Umno president’s post, he would reform the party by giving priority to the needs of the grassroots.
