‘Sirul gave me a letter to pass to Dr M, says wants to tell all’

PETALING JAYA: Former policeman Sirul Azhar Umar, who was convicted of murdering Altantuya Shariibuu, has written to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, says a former Umno division leader Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan.

While its contents are unknown, Sirul has once again expressed his willingness to tell what really happened to the Mongolian beauty.

In a statement yesterday, Khairuddin said he met Sirul on June 28 at the Villawood Detention Camp in Sydney.

“We had a long talk – for about one and a half hours. Sirul seemed healthy and calm,” he said.

“I am convinced that the truth behind Altantuya Shaaribu’s murder will be revealed.”

He said Sirul then passed him a letter that was to be given to Dr Mahathir.

“The letter is sealed and even I don’t know its content,” said Khairuddin.

“I will deliver the letter to the Prime Minister when I return to Malaysia in a few days.”

In an earlier interview with a media portal in May, Sirul said he would reveal what happened to Altantuya if he was given a full pardon to return to Malaysia.

In 2009, Sirul and accomplice Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering Altantuya and were sentenced to death.

The Court of Appeal overturned their sentences in 2013 but upon the prosecution’s appeal, they were upheld by the Federal Court.

Sirul fled to Australia where he was detained by the Immigration there after Interpol issued a red notice on him.

He has been at the detention centre since 2015.
