Man declines fare for helping sick woman
PETALING JAYA: A Grab driver never thought that driving a sick woman to the hospital would gain him fame on social media.
“I think it is a small gesture,” Mohd Nor Iman Abdullah said.
‘“Are you the driver who sent a woman to the hospital and refused to get paid?’ is a question I get from some of my passengers now.
“They recognise me due to a viral post on Facebook.”
The woman’s daughter, Carmen Kiaw, shared the post to a public group on Facebook.
Detailing the chronology of events, Kiaw said Nor Iman took her mother to the hospital when she was not feeling well.
She said the driver helped to carry her mother to the car and refused money after arriving at the hospital.
The post has since garnered more than 16,000 reactions and shared 946 times.
In the post, Kiaw said she received a call while she was at work.
She then rushed home to send her mother to the hospital.
When the Grab driver arrived, Kiaw asked him to help her carry her mother into the car and that she would pay him more for his assistance.
Instead, Mohd Nor Iman, 23, consoled Kiaw and told her not to worry.
“Memories of my late mother came to my mind then. I never had the chance to look after her as I was a baby,” he said.
When contacted, Kiaw said she was touched by the kind act of a complete stranger.
“He is kind and helpful. We could not thank him enough,” she said.
Mohd Nor Iman and Kiaw have since become friends.
“We still keep in touch. Her mother is very grateful and happy to see me,” he said.
Some online portals have also picked up the viral post, with headlines like “kind-hearted Malay Grab driver helping Chinese ladies”.
“I think race is not an issue when we want to offer help,” said Mohd Nor Iman.
Despite the incident that took place over a month ago, some of his passengers still ask him about it.
“Through this incident, I realise that a small act of kindness can mean a lot to others,” he said.
