WAO: When in need of help, victims prefer to text

-

PETALING JAYA: Victims of domestic violence are more comfortable seeking help through social messaging application WhatsApp, rather than with a phone call.

According to the Women’s Aid Organisation’s (WAO) annual report, there were 1,698 consultations through its WhatsApp and “TINA” SMS helpline last year, as compared to just 699 consultations in 2016.

WAO’s telephone hotline only saw 2,078 calls in 2017 and 1,640 calls in 2016.

WAO case manager Charlene Murray said many domestic violence victims felt more comfortable in reaching out through texting, particularly WhatsApp, as it is perceived to be less intimidating than speaking over the phone.

“The trend is consistent with data showing that Malaysians are one of the most avid WhatsApp users globally.

“By understanding how domestic violence survivors communicate, we can be more strategic in reaching out to them,” Murray said in a press statement.

According to Murray, “TINA” SMS helpline has been widely used by domestic violence victims since its launch in 2014.

TINA, which stands for “Think I Need Aid”, is a platform for domestic violence victims to seek information on their rights and options.

It is also an entry point to access WAO’s services such as shelter and social work.

“More domestic violence survivors are coming forward to seek help.

“Usage of our Hotline and TINA services are at an all-time high.

“This shows that more women are aware of their rights and are choosing to break the silence,” she said.

Murray added that WAO has been going to ground raising awareness about domestic violence.

Last year, they reached over 3,000 people in-person, through talks and mobile information booths.

“Strong legal protection also encourages survivors to speak up.

“WAO and women’s groups worked with the Government to improve protection for survivors, resulting in the amendments to the Domestic Violence Act,” said Murray.

Domestic violence survivors can text TINA at 018-988 8058 or call the WAO hotline at 03-7956 3488 for assistance.
