Employer gets jail for ‘potato assault’ on maid

-

A 32- YEAR- OLD woman in Singapore was sentenced to four weeks’ jail for throwing a potato at the face of her Indonesian maid, Oriental Daily reported.

Suhaeni Saleh, 31, had a bleeding nose following the “potato assault” at the apartment of her employer, Siti Faseha, on July 13 last year.

On that day, Suhaeni had returned from the market with groceries but her employer soon dis- covered that she had bought potatoes instead of onions.

Apparently, Suhaeni had also not washed some salted eggs as instructed.

This caused Siti Faseha to get angry. She picked up a potato and threw it at Suhaeni’s face.

Suhaeni ran to the bathroom and was followed by Siti Faseha, who apologised and helped her to clean up the blood.

A week later, Suhaeni sought help from the Ministry of Manpower and she was referred to the police.

On Wednesday, a judge meted the sentence after taking into consideration that the employer had regretted her actions immediately and also paid compensation to the maid.

> China Press reported that a highspeed train in Zhengzhou, China, came to an abrupt halt after a passenger applying perfume in the bathroom somehow triggered the fire alarm.

A technician inspecting the cause of the incident traced it to a carriage where a woman had been liberally using highly-concentrated perfume and the entire bathroom was misted over.

The unscheduled stop on Tuesday morning caused a three-minute delay that snowballed into a massive delay for other trains.
