ALOR SETAR: Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says she will step down as Deputy Prime Minister when her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim becomes the prime minister.

“It has always been my intention since the beginning and it shouldn’t be made into an issue.

“However, at present, the Prime Minister is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and I am his deputy,” she said here yesterday.

Dr Wan Azizah also stated that her commitment to her role as the Women, Family and Community Development Minister remains unaffected by her Deputy Prime Minister’s position.

She was earlier accompanied by Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir to check on the Sungai Kedah/Anak Bukit Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) project during her first official working tour to Kedah.

In Langkawi, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Pakatan Harapan government has pledged not to repeat the “wrongdoings and practices” of the previous government and will uphold the people’s trust.

He said Pakatan-elected representatives have promised clean governance and would hold fast to it.

“This applies also to those appointed into the Government,” he said after launching the Koperasi Pembangunan Daerah Langkawi Berhad annual general meeting in Kuah town here.

Dr Mahathir also said the same model applied to businesses and the cooperatives, and that managers should be sacked if they were found to be corrupt or misappropriated funds.

At another function, Dr Mahathir, who is Langkawi MP, said the island’s duty-free status would remain to help attract spending and to boost tourism.

He added that the duty exemption for gifts and souvenirs is maintained at RM500 per traveller.

He was speaking during his Hari Raya open house here.
