PETALING JAYA: Medical issues such as back pain, obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia will be addressed at the upcoming Star Health Expo 2018.

Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery Specialist Dr Ahmad Nurshahrid Zahari from KPJ Sentosa Specialist Hospital said that the public needs to know the multitude of factors causing back pain.

“Back pain can be a result of trauma, degenerative bones in the spine or ligament problems,” said Dr Ahmad, who will be speaking at the expo on July 14.

He will also explain the exercises needed to protect one’s spine along with proper body posture techniques – especially when carrying heavy loads.

To him, it is important for the public to know how to gauge the severity of their back pain.

“Back pain is common and not every issue requires a surgeon’s attention.

“In my talk, I will address when it is necessary to see a spine surgeon,” he said.

On July 15, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and

Head and Neck surgeon Dr Muhamad Noorhisyam Salleh will be sharing his knowledge on snoring and its related obstructive sleep apnea.

“Snoring is not a disease. It just results in a sound. But what happens when you stop breathing while snoring? Episodes of breathing failure can cause damage to the body,” he said.

Dr Muhamad Noorhisyam said the public needs to know what medical treatments are available, including surgery.

“The public must realise the importance of sleep, before a lack of it results in something deadly,” he said.

In line with the topic of sleep, Edward Yong (pic) from AmLife will also be speaking on July 15 on the importance of sleep, its restorative process and the effects of modern lifestyles on sleep durations and habits.

Yong, who has a certificate in Applied Nutrition, will be presenting global statistics of people suffering from insomnia and sleep disorders as well as the recent Malaysia National Sleep Survey by AC Nielsen.

“I will also be introducing a well-researched therapy from Japan called bio-electric potential therapy, which is now available in a medical device.

“I will explain how it works in aiding sleep and as a choice for sleep wellness,” said Yong.
