Kar Yen continues great run by bagging gold medal
SUBANG JAYA: Former international Hee Kar Yen underlined her intention to challenge for the national title by capturing the women’s singles title in the 31st Inter-State Bowling Championships.
The 28-year-old won the six-game contest wire-to-wire, rolling lines of 223-235-241-209233-204 for a 1,344 total to finish 61 pins ahead of second-placed Nerosha Keligit of Sarawak at the Sunway Mega Lanes, in Sunway Pyramid yesterday.
Former national youth bowler Qistina Zainal claimed the bronze with a 1,241 total.
Kar Yen was delighted to win her second gold medal in Inter-State meet. She was part of the four-woman Kuala Lumpur squad who triumphed in the team event in 2013.
“Short-oil pattern has always been my cup of tea and I took full advantage of it,” said Kar Yen, who quit the national team in 2015 and now runs an online flower business.
“Winning my first individual title in the Inter-State meet is special, but more importantly it got KL off to a good start. Our aim is to become the overall champions again.”
Being a part-time bowler is no hindrance to Kar Yen as she continued to excel in the sport. She has been going great guns in the past two
weeks by finishing fourth and sixth respectively in the Macau and Hong Kong Opens.
The good run will certainly stand her in good stead for the women’s Open crown in the National Championships which takes place at the same venue on Saturday.
Sarawak’s Abang Afiq Yazid Abang Azman demolished the field to win the men’s gold medal. He chalked up 1,392 total to finish 114 pins ahead of Negri Sembilan’s Mohd Fadhli Ramli. Veteran Azidi Ameran of Selangor scored 1,221 to take the bronze.
Selangor and Negri Sembilan also bagged a gold each with Mohd Azizi Naim successfully retaining his boys’ singles crown while Puteri Nurul Dini came out tops in the girls’ singles competition.
The tournament resumes with the double events today.
