MCA Youth: Recognise UEC to fulfil GE14 manifesto
PETALING JAYA: MCA Youth has urged the Pakatan Harapan government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) to fulfil its election manifesto.
Its chairman Datuk Chong Sin Woon said that before the general election, Barisan Nasional and Pakatan had listed the recognition of the UEC as one of their election promises.
“This shows that UEC recognition is high on the agenda for both the ruling and opposition parties,” he said in a statement.
However, Chong said after the general election, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik had come out with reasons claiming that recognising UEC would undermine the status of the national language and national unity.
Chong said Pakatan had obviously changed its preelection stance, adding: “This is an immoral act that blatantly violates a promise.”
He said UEC recognition was resolved by the former Barisan government much earlier, as it also accepted ALevels and equivalent qualifications for entry to public universities.
He urged Dr Maszlee to delegate the authority of recognising UEC to his deputy Teo Nie Ching, whom he said was once a Chinese Independent High School student.
