PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun has refuted an article in the Sarawak Report which implied that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had sponsored the attendance of Asia’s top cops at his daughter’s wedding.

The Inspector-General of Police said the report was inaccurate in many ways, including the part mentioning his wife, who passed away in December.

“When invitations were sent to my counterparts, it was understood that I would personally foot the bill.

“In fact, only my counterpart from Brunei attended the wedding,” he told The Star. The IGP stressed that he bore the expenses of the Brunei police chief himself.

“In no way were funds from the government or PDRM used to pay for the wedding or travel expenses of my guests,” he said.

Mohamad Fuzi said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is welcome to investigate the claims.

“Why would I resort to such dubious means for my own daughter’s wedding?

“I have nothing to hide,” he said. He further described the report by the online portal as untrue.

“I am close to retirement, and I have more than enough savings to spend on my daughter’s wedding,” he said.

The country’s top cop is also mulling further action to take against the online portal.

The report questioned who agreed to pay for the attendance of a swathe of Asia’s top cops who were invited to the wedding on July 1.

Sarawak Report claimed the wedding itself was by various accounts lavish, but perhaps a career at the top of Special Branch and the Royal Malaysia Police Force enables sufficient savings to be made.

It further highlighted a series of invitations that are understood to have been sent out to several of the IGP’s most senior counterparts in South-East Asia from his official headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Sent on April 6, the portal said the e-mail was titled “Wedding Reception of the Honourable IGP’s Daughter”.

It then goes on to extend the invitation from Fuzi and his wife to various high-ranking police officers to attend the event at the One World Hotel in Bandar Utama.
