KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional exercise and diet methods may have worked wonders in the past, but a shake-up is needed to get more young people interested in keeping fit and healthy.

Great Eastern Life chief executive officer Datuk Koh Yaw Hui acknowledged that today’s youth are more inclined towards activities that incorporate fun, teamwork and technology.

“In the past seven years since we teamed up with Star Media Group on its health fair, we have noticed that young people love to participate in unique games and ways to stay active.

“It is a good sign and we hope to encourage more people, especially the young, to pay more attention to their health and fitness,” he said after the launch of the Star Health Expo 2018 here yesterday.

Also present were Star Media Group chief content officer Esther Ng and chief revenue officer Lydia Wang.

One of the largest locally and held for the 17th consecutive year, the three-day expo, which ends today, showcases the latest in fitness trends, healthy living and nutrition along with medical and alternative treatments.

Formerly known as Star FitForLife, the event connects the public with medical practitioners as well as health and lifestyle experts.

Themed “Get Fit. Live Great!” the expo is aimed at inspiring Malaysians to lead a healthy lifestyle by adopting a holistic approach that includes physical and mental health, emotional well-being and financial wellness.

In keeping with the need to cater for youths, Great Eastern has upped its game this year by having eight activities free for all visitors at its booth, where family and friends, young and old, can enjoy together.

Koh also said the ever-popular LIVE GREAT Dodgeball Open is making a comeback.

“For a new challenge, I suggest visitors try out the LIVE GREAT Sky Track to test their courage and strength by navigating four unique high-rope obstacles that are set 6m above the ground,” he explained.

An exclusive gift awaits the first 110 LIVE GREAT members who complete the obstacles.

Another activity that is bound to attract avid gamers is the Kinect Workout, an interactive Xbox game that provides a simple workout that suits all ages.

The Kinetic Bike Race allows participants to challenge each other while burning calories, and for those wanting to stimulate their minds, the Laser Maze tests participants’ agility, flexibility and strategic thinking.

Koh said the activities are designed to suit people of different ages and fitness levels, making the whole experience a good combination of workouts for the family.

The Star Health Expo 2018 takes place at Halls 1 to 3 of the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, from 10am to 7pm. Admission is free.

It is organised by I.Star Events Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Star Media Group Bhd, with Great Eastern Life as exclusive event partner.
