Grads all set to take on the world

BE proactive and befriend those who will be able to guide you. This is Rovate Linggie Anak Kalong’s mantra to success.

Life wasn’t always a bed of roses for the son of a retired lorry driver and housewife but the hardships he endured has played a fundamental role in his life.

“I received a call from the university a day before graduation, asking me for my details. I was curious and wanted to know why. I did not expect to win this award!” he said with excitement.

The Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate was the recipient of the Industry Award during the MSU College’s 22nd convocation ceremony last Saturday.

The Miri native was one of 922 graduates who received their scrolls from MSU pro-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin.

From chasing assignment deadlines to attending classes and extracurricular activities, college life can be hectic, which is why Rovate is proactive in making friends and forming study groups.

“Keep a good relationship with your lecturers too.

“If you spend time with those who are as lost as you feel with a certain topic instead of seeking help, you will not get anywhere.

“It is also important to have a fighting spirit and turn disappointments into inspirations to do better,” shared the 22-year-old.

For President’s Gold Medal Award winner Leonie Vitalis Lotius, the news was overwhelming.

“I watched a lot of Korean dramas to de-stress!” the 21-year-old joked when asked her secret to success, adding that she also focused on the tips her lecturers provided.

“You must be disciplined and active in extracurricular activities as academic excellence alone is not enough,” she said, adding that it is equally vital for students to learn time management, to send in their assignments on time and to respect their lecturers.

The Diploma in Management graduate aspires to become a human resources manager.

“I prefer studying at night as I concentrate better when it is quieter and more peaceful,” said Natalie Ose Simon, 24.

“Preparations for exams usually begin a week before my papers because if I start revising too early, I won’t be able to remember what I studied!” said the Keningau, Sabah native.

The daughter of a farmer and clerk, the eldest of two children and Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology graduate was the recipient of the Academic Award.

“With this award I managed to secure a scholarship to pursue my undergraduate with MSU.

“It will take a load off my parents’ shoulders and lessen their burden,” she shared, advising her peers to be unafraid to take opportunities.

MSU president Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid did not hold back his delight as he expressed his elation over the graduates’ performances, particularly in terms of their industry attachment.

“I hope they will continue their quest for education as it is a lifelong learning component, which can contribute to our nation building.

“As everything around us is constantly changing, we must equip ourselves to be better,” he said after the ceremony.

Increasing its skills based programmes are some of the plans in the university’s pipeline as it moves forward.

“One of our strategic objectives for the next five years is to empower these programmes in all of our MSU colleges.

“This is in line with the university’s policy to create job matching programmes which ensures its graduates obtain vocations that matches their skills,” Prof Mohd Shukri said.
