FAMILY members and friends gathered to celebrate the success of 55 students who received their Foundation Certificates in Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

The Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) award ceremony was held at a hotel in Johor last Saturday.

Student representative Neshvinder Singh Balbir Singh said he was honoured to be selected to speak on behalf of the graduating Foundation Class of 2017.

“This foundation programme has given us a unique opportunity of taking a pre-university level course that is tailored specifically to biomedical and medical courses.

“This programme is unique and has provided us with the necessary exposure to university culture as well as the knowledge and skills to advance to the next level of our studies,” he said.

Congratulating the students, NUMed deputy chief executive officer Prof Christopher Baldwin who is also the dean of Biomedical and Foundation Studies, said he was proud of their achievements.

“This journey may be challenging at times and you may face difficulties as you travel along the path you have chosen, but please be assured that you have the very best preparation for this journey,” he added.

Newcastle University has been educating Malaysian students at its campus in the United Kingdom for over 40 years.

NUMed provost and chief executive officer Prof Roger Barton said the university began as a medical school in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England.

“We have been educating Malaysian students at our UK campus for over 40 years.

“Since the opening of our Malaysia campus, we’ve produced over 100 graduates here,” he added.

Established in 2009, this international branch campus of NUMed draws on the legacy of Newcastle University in the UK. It is an ideal place to develop a career in medicine or biomedical sciences.

Since its inception in 1834 as a medical school, the institution has always been at the forefront of research and teaching, its reputation externally confirmed as of the highest international quality.

NUMed offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences as well as opportunities for foundation and postgraduate studies.

The programmes of study lead to the award of the same degrees as those studied at the parent campus in the UK.

NUMed’s curriculum is also designed to complement curiosity-driven self study and help students develop learning habits that are beneficial in life-long learning.

With nearly 50 Malaysians enrolled currently on its UK undergraduate medical programme, Newcastle remains one of the most popular UK destinations for Malaysian medical students studying abroad.

The establishment of NUMed here in Malaysia means that future students will now have the advantage of getting the best of both worlds receiving quality UK-preferred medical education in Malaysia at an affordable price.

The essential factor for Newcastle University’s primary market position as a world-leading medical education provider is the quality of the educational experience.

All quality-related activities are inextricably linked to contribute to the overall experience as well-designed innovative programmes are delivered to students by highly motivated and well-qualified academics complemented by carefully considered student support strategies and a firm ethic of scholarship.
