Sandwich takes the cake
Law student wins Brekkie Challenge with cold turkey ham creation
PETA LING JAYA : The Star Health Expo 2018 closed with the exciting Live Great Healthy Brekkie Challenge, won by law student Lim Jas Lin.
Lim said her winning cold cut turkey ham sandwich, held together with aioli (mayonnaise seasoned with garlic), was a “simple” sandwich which she loved.
“I decided to become a competitor to challenge myself,” said the 20-year-old.
“I thought it would be agood challenge for me, as I have always liked cooking as a hobby.
“I never thought I would be chosen as a contestant, but once I got chosen there was no turning back!”
The challenge saw 12 contestants preparing a healthy breakfast using 110 ingredients – the number of ingredients being chosen specifically to match Great Eastern Life’s 110th anniversary this year (2018).
Held for the seventh consecutive year, the three-day expo, which ran from Friday, was organised by I.Star Events Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Star Media Group Berhad, with Great Eastern Life as exclusive event partner.
Lim also said she was impressed with the expo.
“I think it is a good idea as it helps educate people about leading a healthy lifestyle,” she added.
Judges for the Live Great Healthy Brekkie Challenge included renowned local chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, known fondly as Chef Wan, Sunway Le Cordon Bleu technical director and cuisine chef instructor Rodolphe On no and DC Restaurant chef-owner Darren Chin.
Chef Wan said many of the contestants lacked proper knowledge about even making asandwich.
“A sandwich is not just two slices of bread with a filling inside. When it comes to the filling, you need to know how to play with flavours,” he said when interviewed.
He said Lim’s winning entry, which included a side salad, had the best flavour.
“She also has creativity,” he said, adding that the contestants could take the challenge as a way to improve their cooking skills.
Chefs Onno and Chin agreed with Chef Wan's assessment of the contestants.
“I would say that many lacked the foundation (of cooking). For the younger generation, it’s so easy to just buy sandwiches,” Onno said. He added it was easy for Malaysians to start eating healthy because of the availability of fresh ingredients at wet markets and supermakets in the country.
The first runner-up for the challenge was Chan Win Sern, 29, and second runner-up was Mohd Faris Iskandar Khairuddin, 23.
The last day of the expo saw many families having a day out.
At the Great Eastern Life booths, Mei Lee Chen, 46, was seen creating button badges with her fouryear-old daughter Clarabelle Ee at the Button Badge Workshop.
Lukman Sabri, 33, wife Azimah Ramli, 32, and their five-year-old son Ziad Iman were seen watching the Live Great Dodgeball Open 2018atthe expo.
“We've been exploring the area for more than twohours. It’s been a fun family day out,” said Lukman, an engineer.
Star Health Expo 2018 was held at the MidValley Exhibition Centre.
