SHAH ALAM: The grand efforts of some 30,000 people who gathered here and at various other locations in the country for a 30-hour charity fasting event proved not to be in vain.

In all, they managed to raise RM2.2mil in aid of impoverished children and communities all over the world.

World Vision Malaysia’s 30-Hour Famine Countdown began on Saturday.

About half the crowd participated in the fast at 180 Do-It-Yourself (DIY) camps spread across the nation while the other half turned up for the final hours of the countdown at Stadium Malawati here.

World Vision Malaysia CEO Daniel Boey said he was encouraged and humbled by the support given by Malaysians, especially the younger generation, towards the effort.

“Their passion and motivation to reach out and help others, as well as their eagerness to learn more about the key issues affecting the vulnerable, is truly uplifting,” he said.

The highlight of the Countdown was a special appearance by Hong Kong- based singer- songwriter G.E.M. who served as the 30-Hour Famine Ambassador 2018.

“I salute all the participants of the event. They are changing lives of children and communities in need,” she said.

The event, first held in 1997, raised more than RM32mil for community development projects and emergency responses in more than 18 countries.

Funds raised this year will be used to combat food insecurity and malnutrition issues in India, Lesotho, Myanmar, and in rural Malaysia.

The challenged communities in Sabah will be provided with education and training and healthcare awareness programmes.

Marginalised children will be given access to quality education.

Those who wish to donate to the cause can still do so by logging on to www.30hourfamine.my or by calling World Vision Malaysia at (603) 7880 6414.
