Help the needy by shopping
JOHOR BARU: Driven by her passion for charity, Chis Pang Hwei Sim has come out with an unconventional way for the public to lend a helping hand.
The 42-year-old mother of three has opened a shop selling second-hand items, donated by well-wishers and channelled the profits to fund charity projects.
Dubbed Momo Love Concept, the shop located in Taman Desa Tebrau opened its doors in March and has since been a platform for the public to help low-income families by just shopping.
Pang said the idea to create the space had been on her mind for a long time and when a shop was made available for rent next to her make-up and nail academy, she immediately grabbed the opportunity.
“There are many out there who want to reach out to the underprivileged but are unable to do so because of time constraint.
“This shop offers a sustainable way of providing aid to those in need while also allowing others to experience the joy of giving,” she said.
Charity projects from the shop include Vision Care Project where some 100 specta- cles were donated to needy pupils, and home makeover project where houses of targeted groups of people with low income were renovated.
“The clothes are donated by friends and other well-wishers who want to give back to the community,” she said.
“We will then sort, clean and iron them before displaying them in the boutique.
“Just because the items were used does not mean that it cannot be used by others in need.”
Pang said the shop was set in a soothing atmosphere where people could relax while doing charity work.
Other than second-hand clothes, Momo Love Concepts also sells handmade earrings and a variety of pouches.
“The earrings are made by underprivileged kids and the profits from the sales are given back to them.
“The pouches are made by single mothers and housewives unable to go out to work,” she said, adding that they were given training with sewing machines donated by the public.
Earring workshops were also held for the public and proceeds from these classes were channelled to charity projects, besides main- taining the shop.
Momo Love Concepts is open on weekdays from 9.30am to 6pm and 9.30am to 3pm on Saturdays.
It is closed on Sundays.
