Zahid to discuss PAC chief post offer with MPs

-

OPPOSITION leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will consult other Barisan Nasional and PAS MPs over the chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which the Government has “offered” him.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament lobby, Dr Ahmad Zahid said he had yet to receive any official offer letter on the appointment as PAC chief.

“The normal practice is for the PAC chief to come from the Government while his deputy is from the Opposition.

“We will consult other Barisan and PAS MPs, who are also in the Opposition bloc as per the normal practice for four of its lawmakers to be appointed into the PAC,” he said, adding that he only read about the “offer” from the media.

Earlier, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said it would ask Dr Ahmad Zahid if he wanted the job.

Pakatan, said Liew, would not be naming its own candidate for the post, which was last chaired by Barisan Nasional’s Rompin MP

“So, we have to ask if he (Dr Ahmad Zahid) wants it. If he wants it, the Government and Speaker will consider it,” he said.

Pakatan, added Liew, would not have a candidate as its election manifesto promised to name a PAC chief from the Opposition.

Asked when the appointment would be settled, he said this would be done by this Parliament meeting, which ends on Aug 16.
