Rectify unfair pension anomaly

- KSN Batu Caves, Selangor

I HOPE the Pensions Department, Public Service Department, Treasury, Cuepacs and other relevant authorities take note of the letter, “Thank you but please revise formula” ( The Star, July 26). This subject has been raised before but there was no response.

As the writer said, the maximum period taken into account for the computation of monthly pension is 360 months even if a person’s service exceeds this.

Those with fewer years of service are paid based on the actual length of their service. But what about those who have served for more than 360 months? If someone worked for 400 months, he gets nothing for working an extra 40 months when he retires. Is that fair? This is an anomaly that should be corrected.

Pensioners in this category are mainly from the lower ranks of the civil service like clerks and office boys. Let us be fair to them and all civil servants by calculating their pension based on the actual years of service when they retire.

I request on behalf of all pensioners that our new government address this anomaly in Budget 2019 so that those who are affected will be able to cope with the high cost of living.

There is no need for arrears. The departments concerned should bring this matter to the attention of the Finance Minister for his consideration and correction. Pensioners will be most grateful.
