Ervin right behind leader Sohel in third round

-

PETALING JAYA: Asian Gamesbound golfer Ervin Chang stole the show by firing a five-under 67 to move into joint second after the third round of the PGM Northport Championship.

The 19-year-old mixed eight birdies with three bogeys to lie just two shots behind leader Shakhawat Sohel of Bangladesh on an eight-under 208 total at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Ervin, one of seven amateurs playing in the 113-man field this week, sits in a three-way tie for second with Scott Barr of Australia and Chanat

Sakulpolphaisan of Thailand.

Having recently landed the Singapore Amateur Open crown, Ervin is all pumped up to try to win his maiden professional title.

If he does, then he will emulate the success of compatriot Gavin Kyle

Green, who remains the only amateur winner on the Asian Development Tour circuit since 2010.

I played in a few ADT tournaments already and I loved the environment and the chance to play with the professionals,” said Ervin, whose previ- ous best ADT result was a joint 16th at the PGM UMW Championship in May 2016.

“I’m in a great position, but there are still 18 holes to play. I’ll do my best and if I do win it, it’ll be a bonus for me,” he said.

Overnight leader Sukree Othman could only manage a 72 to slip to joint fifth with fellow veteran R. Nachimuthu and American Josh Salah.

With the top eight golfers separated by just four shots, the competition is still wide open.

There’s still no Malaysian winner on the ADT this season.
