KUALA LUMPUR: The Datuk Seri accused of voluntarily causing hurt to three Rela personnel, is seeking to compensate the three victims.

Businessman Liow Soon Hee’s counsel Datuk Rajpal Singh told Ampang magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Saidina Ali that he would send a letter of representation to Rela director-general Zulkifli Abidin today on possible compensation to Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, Lee Weng Poh and Leong Jun Jie.

The letter will be handed over to lawyer Datuk Michael Wong who is holding a watching brief for Rela, Rajpal said.

Rajpal said there was a provision under the Criminal Procedure Code that an accused in an assault case can be let off with a fine .

Previously, the accused had sent letter of representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) but it had been rejected.

Clad in pastel blue long sleeve shirt, a pair of black pants and shoes, Liow appeared calm standing in the dock when his case began at 11.45am.

Wearing their Rela uniform, the three victims – Cheong, Lee and Leong – were also present in court. They were accompanied by fellow Rela members C.W. Liew and Y.F. Chin.

Later, the court read out an amended charge against Liow under Section 323 of the Penal Code where he pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to Lee, 28. He was previously charged under Section 325 of the Code for causing grievous hurt to Lee.

The accused faces another two charges under Section 323 of the Code for causing hurt to Leong, 22, and Cheong, 20.

Liow, 30, was also charged with using cri- minal force to deter Cheong from carrying out his duty as a Rela officer and was accused under Section 353 of the same Code.

All of the offences were allegedly committed at the compound of Kou Ong Yah Temple, Jalan Merdeka, Kampung Baru Ampang in Ampang at about 6.30am on Oct 27, last year.

Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus fixed Aug 14 for mention pending outcome of the letter of representation.
