IPOH: About 100 people attended the funeral of the late Teoh Seng Khoon, who was part of the 1949 Thomas Cup winning team.

Consisting mostly of family members, relatives and some close friends, a prayer was held during the funeral rites yesterday morning.

Those present also sang Amazing Grace as dark clouds enveloped the sky and it rained heavily.

The rain eased up before the cortege was sent off to a crematorium in Tanjung Rambutan.

The 99-year-old Teoh died peacefully here on Tuesday.

He leaves behind a son, Kah Tin, and three daughters – Seok Leng, Mei Ling and Suat Leng.

Together with Chan Kon Leong, Ooi Teik Hock, Law Teik Hock, Lim Kee Fong, Ong Poh Lim, Wong Peng Soon, Yeoh Teck Chye and team captain Lim Chuan Geok, they won Malaysia’s first Thomas Cup in December 1949.

With doubles partner Ooi, they also bagged the All-England title that same year.

The SMK Methodist (formerly known as Anglo-Chinese School) Ipoh alumnus also spent his early years as a journalist.

Kah Tin, 78, said no one from the badminton and media fraternity were present during the funeral.

Recalling his father during his younger days, Kah Tin said he liked to drive to Old Town area to have a cuppa.

“He also enjoyed outdoor activities and to go hunting.

“His ashes will be placed at a columbarium in Tambun,” he said.
