Sungai Kandis voters cast ballot today

-

KLANG: The Sungai Kandis byelection will come to an end today.

Both Umno candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam and his PKR opponent Zawawi Ahmad Mughni will face off while the third candidate independent K. Murthy is of no significance in the state polls.

Leaders from both divides gathered in the constituency last night in their last ditch campaigns to convince the electorate to vote for their respective candidates.

DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang, dur ing a visit to the constituency urged voters to choose Zawawi, 48, to increase Pakatan Harapan’s majority.

If this is achieved, it will send Barisan Nasional a clear message that the people still believed in and supported Pakatan Harapan to bring change to the nation’s administration system, he said.

Lokman was quick to point out Zawawi’s campaign tactics undermined his own “people”.

There has been some criticism over Zawawi’s campaign which only revolved around local issues such as clogged drains and garbage collection.

Political analyst Dr Muhammad Asri Mohd Ali, who is a research fellow with the National Council of Professors, said addressing local issues during election campaigns in urban areas was usually of little significance.

“In urban areas where literacy levels are high, voters pick their candidates based on a larger picture such as administrative policies,” he said when contacted.

The Election Commission is expected to complete the counting of votes and announce the results before or by 10pm tonight.
