Tests and talks to guide school-leavers
PETALING JAYA: Career tests and trusty advisers are of great help to schoolleavers when they decide on what course to pursue after completing their secondary education.
This is why students who are unsure of their next step should drop by The Star Education Fair 2018 at Halls 4 and 5 of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today and tomorrow.
A “Career Interest Test” managed by Berjaya University College is available to help determine a suitable pathway for each individual.
Berjaya University College operations and events director Pilar Palma said the career test is an excellent way for students to determine which career pathway is right for them.
“The test matches individual likes with that of careers, helping students explore jobs or career options for the future,” she said, noting that the test comprises six interest areas.
These include building (jobs involving the use of tools, machines or physical skill); thinking (jobs involving theory, research and intellectual inquiry); creating (jobs involving art, design, language and self expression); helping (jobs involving assisting, teaching, coaching and serving other people); persuading (jobs involving leading, motivating and influencing others); and organising (jobs involving managing data, information and processes).
A series of education and career talks, featuring many speakers and topics will also be held at the Star Education Fair 2018.
Among them is University of Reading Malaysia director of marketing, communications, admissions and recruitment director Madeleine Tan who will be speaking on “What Employers and Industry Are Looking For?” from 11.30am to noon today.
She will share how students can ‘future proof’ themselves to avoid being redundant.
“At least 50% of jobs in 20 years’ time will not exist,” she said.
Those who are keen in pursuing an overseas education can gain insights from experts from noon to 2pm today during the “Study and Work Overseas” segment.
MAHSA University Faculty of Medicine dean Prof Datuk Dr Ravindran Jegasothy will be speaking about “What Does It Take To Be A Doctor?” from 3.30pm to 4pm.
MedCoach International Consulting Co Ltd founder and programme director Dr Atchara Srisodsai will touch on “Study Medicine in Hungary: World Class Medical School in Europe” from 4.15pm to 4.45pm.
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences lecturer Jagjit Kaur will speak about “Job Prospects For Well Educated Nurses” from 4.45pm to 5.15pm.
AIMST University Faculty of Applied Sciences dean Prof Manickam Ravichandran will speak on “Career Pathways in Biotechnology” from 5.30pm to 6pm.
Other talks on computer science, tourism and the importance of a global education are also being held today.
Qualified counsellors, academic staff from local and international higher learning institutions will be present to brief students and parents on a wide range of certificate, foundation, diploma, degree and postgraduate courses as well as on professional qualifications.
Attractive discounts and scholarships will also be offered on the spot.
The Star Education Fair will be held at Exhibition Halls 4 and 5 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 11am to 7pm today and tomorrow. Admission is free.
