#KitaLawan trio freed of charges
KUALA LUMPUR: Three people, including a deputy minister, who took part in a #KitaLawan rally three years ago, have been freed by a magistrate’s court here after their charges were withdrawn.
Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman acquitted and discharged Deputy Agriculture and Agrobased Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah and Bersih secretariat officer Mandeep Singh when their case was mentioned yesterday.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Elynna Hanim Abd Halim had earlier told the court that they had considered the letter of representation sent to the AttorneyGeneral’s Chambers (AGC) and wished to withdraw the charges against the three.
Sim, 42, Maria, 62, and Mandeep, 32, were charged with taking part in the street protest against the then Goods and Services Tax and to free Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim between 3.15pm and 6pm on March 28, 2015.
The trio, who were charged on Sept 8, 2015, had been given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Aug 28 last year.
However, on Oct 4 last year, they were again slapped with the same charges, to which they claimed trial.
Their counsel Vince Tan Hoo Seh said the court accepted the letter sent to the AGC in June and acquitted his clients on the basis that the charges were politically motivated.
