Celebratin­g students’ success

THE Centre for American Education (CAE) at Sunway University celebrates the achievemen­ts of students from the American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) at an annual awards event every summer.

It acknowledg­es Sunway University students who have completed the first half of their ADTP programme. In 2018, 57 students are opting for transfer to the institutio­n of their choice including universiti­es in the Unted States, Canada, United Kingdom and South Korea with 20 of them continuing the second half of their degrees abroad on scholarshi­ps from their respective universiti­es.

Former SMK Seafield student Sarah Eunice Stephen who will major in Actuarial Science, has been awarded the Presidenti­al Transfer Award and Internatio­nal Student Grant worth US$18,000 (RM74,160) per annum from Drake University in the US.

CAE head Dr Sim Tze Ying said that ADTP students are told about scholarshi­p opportunit­ies through the University Life class, Sunway advisors and visiting university representa­tives.

They are motivated to do their best so that they can secure schol-

arships and achieve their goals.

Liew Shan Khai received the Haenicke Scholarshi­p from Western Michigan University (WMU) in the US. He will receive

US$16,000 (RM65,920) per annum from this merit-based scholarshi­p.

Attending the ceremony to witness his achievemen­ts were his mother Khor Cheok Mooi and sister Liew Hui Shuen.

Khor hoped he will be a good example for his two younger sisters to strive hard academical­ly.

Shan Kai intends to major in chemical engineerin­g. He decided to pursue the ADTP at Sunway University as it provided him with a cost effective and faster route to obtaining a degree.

Valedictor­ian and former twoterm CAE Student Committee president Aida Nureen Taqiah Amirul Bahri also received the Haenicke Scholarshi­p worth US$5,000 (RM20,600) per annum from WMU.

Aida who will major in Environmen­tal and Sustainabi­lity Studies, said she has made many friends and tried new things.

“I started to believe that I am capable of doing things that I thought I could not,” she added.

One of the recipients of the CAE Outstandin­g Sports Award 2018 was Mohammad Hariz Mohammad Oryza Ananda.

He took part in the 2017 SEA Games and is a former Malaysian ice hockey team member.

Also present at the ceremony were Sunway University and Sunway Education Group senior executive director Elizabeth Lee, vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson, deputy vice-chancellor Prof Pua Eng Chong and provost Prof Peter Heard.
