Celebrating students’ success
THE Centre for American Education (CAE) at Sunway University celebrates the achievements of students from the American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP) at an annual awards event every summer.
It acknowledges Sunway University students who have completed the first half of their ADTP programme. In 2018, 57 students are opting for transfer to the institution of their choice including universities in the Unted States, Canada, United Kingdom and South Korea with 20 of them continuing the second half of their degrees abroad on scholarships from their respective universities.
Former SMK Seafield student Sarah Eunice Stephen who will major in Actuarial Science, has been awarded the Presidential Transfer Award and International Student Grant worth US$18,000 (RM74,160) per annum from Drake University in the US.
CAE head Dr Sim Tze Ying said that ADTP students are told about scholarship opportunities through the University Life class, Sunway advisors and visiting university representatives.
They are motivated to do their best so that they can secure schol-
arships and achieve their goals.
Liew Shan Khai received the Haenicke Scholarship from Western Michigan University (WMU) in the US. He will receive
US$16,000 (RM65,920) per annum from this merit-based scholarship.
Attending the ceremony to witness his achievements were his mother Khor Cheok Mooi and sister Liew Hui Shuen.
Khor hoped he will be a good example for his two younger sisters to strive hard academically.
Shan Kai intends to major in chemical engineering. He decided to pursue the ADTP at Sunway University as it provided him with a cost effective and faster route to obtaining a degree.
Valedictorian and former twoterm CAE Student Committee president Aida Nureen Taqiah Amirul Bahri also received the Haenicke Scholarship worth US$5,000 (RM20,600) per annum from WMU.
Aida who will major in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, said she has made many friends and tried new things.
“I started to believe that I am capable of doing things that I thought I could not,” she added.
One of the recipients of the CAE Outstanding Sports Award 2018 was Mohammad Hariz Mohammad Oryza Ananda.
He took part in the 2017 SEA Games and is a former Malaysian ice hockey team member.
Also present at the ceremony were Sunway University and Sunway Education Group senior executive director Elizabeth Lee, vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson, deputy vice-chancellor Prof Pua Eng Chong and provost Prof Peter Heard.
