Severely abused blind woman rescued, two remanded

-

BUTTERWORTH: She was said to have been severely abused and neighbours could not bear to hear her screams anymore in silence.

Social workers found the 79yearold blind woman in the back portion of the house where she was allegedly kept till the family members came home for the evening.

“She was soaking wet when our members met her,” said Malaysian Tamilar Kural president David Marshel.

“They poured water on me, I feel so cold because I am drenched. I can’t see.

“Parts of my body are swollen because they keep beating me. I only get a little bit of food,” she told the members.

The following day, Marshel and his team lodged a police report.

Policemen took immediate action and went to the house in Taman Siakap, Seberang Jaya.

They rescued her and arrested the man and woman in the house, who are believed to be the victim’s niece and nephew.

“The woman told us she was living with them for three years. She was beaten with brooms, shoes, plates and bowls.

“They locked her in the back portion every time they went to work,” the police said in a press statement.

Marshel said he was relieved that the woman was rescued before she was seriously harmed.

“We took her to the hospital and now she is under the care of the state Welfare Department.

“She has been blind for one and a half years but we think she will be able to see again with surgery,” he said.

The man and woman were remanded for three days.
