Surgeons reattach severed hand of woman

GEORGE TOWN: The woman whose left hand was severed at the wrist by her husband has undergone a successful surgery to reattach the hand at the Penang Hospital on Sunday.

Her mother said the family was now hoping for a speedy recovery after the 15-hour operation.

“She is still in shock and traumatised. Our family is continuously giving her words of encouragement to stay strong for her children.

“Alhamdulillah, we are grateful that the surgery is successful and I hope her hand can function as usual again,” she said at the hospital on Monday.

The 24-year-old woman’s hand was chopped off by her husband at the Bayu Nyaman apartment parking area in Bayan Lepas near here on Sunday.

The mother said apart from the left hand, her daughter also broke her right foot due to the cruel treat- ment by her husband.

She claimed her son-in-law was a jealous person and had long kept a grudge against her daughter for continuing her nursing studies at a medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

The couple who are currently undergoing a divorce process have two children, a boy and a girl, with the boy being under the care of the man while the girl is under her mother’s care.

Southwest district police chief Supt A.A. Anbalagan said they received a report around 12.55am and rushed to the scene.

They immediately launched an operation and arrested the 39-yearold man in front of a surau in Jalan Maccalum at 3am. The man has been remanded until Saturday.

Penang Health director Datuk Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah said the woman was still under observation to determine if the hand could function properly. — Bernama
