Offers aplenty to help cops improve their English skills
KUALA TERENGGANU: Several groups are keen to help members of the police force improve their English proficiency following the requirement for senior personnel to conduct briefings in English.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said he had received many proposals from several groups but had yet to agree to any of them.
“We will take a look at the offers, and of course we will need to set aside an allocation for it in the training budget,” he said after pre- senting 131 personnel with the Jasa Pahlawan Negara medals for their service.
He said having police personnel speak English more often was a positive change as it would help them, especially when they were sent overseas for training.
However, he stressed that the national language would not be neglected and would continue to be used in official correspondence.
Mohamad Fuzi also said the force might need extra funding to help uphold public safety during the coming Seri Setia and Balakong by-elections, adding that personnel would be shouldering heavy responsibilities in guarding and patrolling premises for long hours.
“They need to be stationed at the nomination, polling and tallying centres, for example.
“We will require a little extra funding to take care of their welfare during this period, and it would go into things like logistics and food.
“We would certainly need more resources, especially in areas where there is a lot of tension and where it would be necessary to intensify security efforts,” he said, adding that a request for additional funds had been put in but had yet to be approved.
