- By JOASH EE DE SILVA

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia may have to pack their bags in the first round of the men’s badminton team event at the Asian Games in Indonesia after being handed a disastrous draw.

In the draw conducted yesterday, Malaysia without old-timer Lee Chong Wei have been drawn against third seeds and favourites Japan in the opening match on Sunday at the Istora Senayan.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary Datuk Ng Chin Chai said Malaysia were simply unlucky but did not want to rule out an upset win.

“It’s a pity that we’re drawn against Japan but this is time for our youngsters to step up,” said Chin Chai.

Japan will be banking on their reigning world champion Kento Momota to give a perfect start while Malaysia will be counting on Goh V ShemTan Wee Kiong and Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin to ensure points in the doubles.

“We need to win both our doubles and steal a point in the singles to stand a chance against Japan.

“On paper, it looks tough but our team will fight all the way and it’ll be great if our young team can create an upset.

“If we beat Japan, the path is smoother for us to go far.”

Malaysia should face either defending champions South Korea or Thailand in the quarter-finals if they survive the first hurdle.

Hosts Indonesia, China and Taiwan have received first round byes.

China will play the winners of the match between Hong Kong and Mongolia while Indonesia will clash against the winners between India and Maldives.
